Inspiration is in others

On Friday I met with a very special lady, Lizzie Thomas who happens to be one of our Dale Carnegie trainers. The conversations with Lizzie are always interesting as she's very insightful, leaving you in a better place almost every time....viewing things differently, infected with her enthusiasm.

So I just wanted to take this opportunity to say: Thanks Lizzie, it's an honour to have met you and you'll continue to be an inspiration to me!

Tuesdays with Morrie

Have you ever read a book which has little pearls of wisdom in it that you just love? Well I am currently reading such a book. It's called Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and it is based on a true story of a college student reconnecting with his college Professor when he finds out he is dying. I have heard I will need the tissues as I can only imagine how sad it may get but at the moment it is an inspiring read.

I am about half of the way in but I wanted to share some of the things Morrie has said which I have loved:

‘So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they are chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.’

‘The most important thing in life is to give out love, and to let it come in.’

During his discussion about death:

‘Do what Buddhists do. Every day, have a little bird on your shoulder that asks, ‘Is today the day? Am I ready? Am I doing all I need to do? Am I being the person I want to be?’

On material possessions:

'Do the kinds of things that come from the heart. When you do you won’t be dissatisfied, you won’t be envious, you won’t be longing for someone else’s things. On the contrary you’ll be overwhelmed with what comes back.’

I love what Morrie says and I truly believe that he has a valid point. Just think...... if everyone gave out love and devoted themselves to the community around them what a wonderful world this would be.

So what can you do today, who can you become to be that small difference in the world?

Happy New Year

Well it’s 2012 and what will the year bring..... What goals and dreams will be achieved?

Promotion within the business
More bonuses
New place to live
New relationships
??????

I was inspired last night to listen to an enthusiastic group of people setting their goals and visions for the year ahead at the first session of the Skills for Success Course at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel.

The group talked about the importance of setting goals and the power of leading an intentional life. As you think about the year ahead, as many of us do at this time, an effective way to make sure we achieve our goals is to write down a vision for 2012. If you choose to take some time out today to do that here are a few simple tips to writing an effective ‘Vision & Goal Statement’
Write in the Present tense – start your vision with the words “It is (Pick a date) and I am ...... By locking in on a set date and writing as though things are already happening it makes it real for us and easier to remember where it is we want to get to.

Write using Powerful language – the words you write should stir your enthusiasm and if when you read it back you’re excited about what you read and looking forward to making it happen you’re on the right track.

Write in Positive language – Talk about things you will be doing rather than things you won’t. For example rather than saying ‘I won’t be stressed and worried at work when something goes wrong’ try something like ..... ‘I’ll be happy and relaxed when problems come up at work and deal with them effectively.’ The reason behind this is our brains are generally more inspired by positives than negatives .... give it a try!

We encourage the clients we work with to set goals for themselves and their businesses and love helping people achieve things that they didn’t think was possible.

We wish you every success in achieving your goals and dreams in 2012. Anything we can do to help give us a call or come along to one of our free sessions.

Employee Retention

Recently HR Review reported about a survey on Employee Engagement. According to the Gallup Engagement Survey only 24% of employees are engaged with their job. That is quite an alarming figure and something that employers need to tackle, especially in this current climate.

In a different survey by ACCOR, 90% of leaders say engagement impacts success, but 75% have no engagement plan.

So why are employee’s struggling to be engaged in their workplace? Is it poor leadership? Are there trust issues? Are the company’s values different to the employees? And what happens if employees are not engaged. Will they produce poor work, not want to involve themselves in projects, or leave and go and work for a competitor?

So how can you raise employee retention? Here are a few ideas:

Relationship with Manager – A recent Gallup poll revealed that a key indicator of employee satisfaction and productivity is employees’ belief that their boss cares about them and can be trusted.

Recognition and Appreciation – Some people are more driven by incentives other than money. Celebrate achievements both individually and as a team; write a note of thanks or recognition with honest, sincere appreciation.

Stimulating, Fulfilling Work – Include employees at the beginning of projects. Employees will be more enthusiastic and you will be surprised to see the creative results and different opinions that bubble up.

Clear Career Path and Opportunities – Providing training opportunities with respect to new skills and career development is an indication that a manager or company is willing to invest on behalf of employees. Encourage employees to join professional organizations by paying membership fees and giving the time off to attend lunches and conferences that foster professional growth.

Respect a Balanced Life – Acknowledging and respecting the importance of family and personal life of employees prevents burnout and fosters loyalty.

At Dale Carnegie we understand the need to engage with employees and gain their commitment. If you would like further tips then why not come along to our Inspirational Leadership Seminar on 24th August and 22nd September.

Inspiration

It is midnight in Austria; the cool breeze brush our faces, the vastness of the sky above our head is a constant reminder of infinitude and expansion, the water is shimmering in the light as the boat noisily sits in place. We take a breath.....we exhale....and smile....appreciating the moment which is so precious.
Quite to our surprise, behind a railway track appears a building, not just any building, a fairytale building, like something out of a Hans Christian Anderson tale! We smile with glee and curiosity and for a moment, we are struck by its beauty, its grandeur, and its quiet strength. The trees sit proudly and protectively in its path as they blow gently across. The richness of the red roof, the spires, the turrets we can see Rapunzels golden hair flowing from the upper window, looking out to the horizon lovingly and like the moon standing gracefully, calm, detached, mysterious and yet infinitely inspiring.
Is Inspiration a fairytale, something we yearn, something we stumble across now and again? Or is it a feeling, an emotion we all have inside the essence of our being that we, you and I turn on and off? And when we choose to turn it on we feel passion, energy, ardour, vigour, joy and love that encourage us and those around us to achieve the most remarkable feats...or simply making someone smile. Being inspirational is our birthright, let's be that moment to moment and watch what unfolds.....
